Do you prepare a particular healthy dish that your birds just LOVE?

The boys (Macaws) love pasta but Scarlet (Eclectus) could take it or leave it. So, I'd say their favorite would have to be yams and mashed banana. The entire flock licks the bowls clean. :)

I use to buy whole yams and cook them in the microwave but then I spotted cubed frozen yams at Trader Joes. It makes this quick dinner even easier. I put the yams in the microwave and then mix in a banana, apple sauce and unsalted butter and serve it warm. They LOVE it!

It's fast and easy for me to make especially when I'm getting home late from work or when the birds have spent the entire day playing outside. They come into the house, exhausted, and just want to "lap" up their mash and go straight to bed.

I always keep bananas in the house. If I don't use them all and they are getting overly ripe I just peel them and wrap them in plastic wrap and freeze them. This way I always have them on hand!

If you have a favorite recipe you would like to share I'll post it on the macawdreams recipe page. List the ingredients and cooking instructions and don't forget to tell us your bird's name!

OK, this is a lot of work, but I make enough for 2 weeks.

I cook up some Hot and Hearty (from Sleek and Sassy) with some Beak Appitite thrown in for flavor). I add a teaspoon of extra cinnimon and sometimes a bit of garlic and let it all simmer for about half an hour.

While that's cooking, I use a little electric chopper to MINCE between 10 - 15 fresh well-washed(organic if possible, but it's often not) veggies. Very tiny pieces. Then, when the bean/grains are almost done, I toss in all the sweet potato pieces and half the rest of the veggies. Then, after cooking for just a few minutes (maybe 5), I let it cool down some and then add the rest of the raw veggies. I figure half the veggies will be cooked and half will still have emzimes - I have no idea if I am correct!!

Then I freeze in small containers (2 days worth per container).

The best part is having Frisco nearby on his stand (not in the kitchen near the stove) and he gets bits and pieces of things that are very interesting to him because mom's been working on them.

I keep some leftover veggies and make a layered salad at the same time (layer of green leafy, layer of veggie chunks, layer of frozen veggies and some pieces of apple and orange on top).

Two times a day I warm up the mash mixture till it's just warm and mix in a little minced almond/walnut mix...all is minced so there's no way to pick much out. And I serve it with a side (the layered) salad and maybe a fresh fruit or two. Often some sprouts on top.

Since everything is pre-prepared, it's pretty quick to make up.

My Lulu (nanday) makes a pig of herself, but sometimes Frisco, my RFM, is picky. So, I mix in a half teaspoon of plain yogurt and he loves that.

After breakfast, cuddle time and play time, I now give them their foraging mix!!! Thank you for this brilliant idea!! I have an old Tupperwear cake carrier (flat bottom) that Frisco uses and Lulu has a smaller tupperwear (low, square) container. This way, I can just cover it after use and it lasts several days.

I love this foraging mix and I can be creative (and I'm using that term loosely). I went to Michaels yesterday and found some crinkly strips of paper people put in gift bags and it works in great with the foraging mix.

Here is a recipe that all my guys love!!!
Birdie Bread Corey-Style

3 x-lrg farm fresh eggs w/crushed shell
1 cup ww flour
1 cup organic non-degerminated corn meal
1/2 cup dry non-fat milk
2 TB baking powder (non aluminum)
1 cup ground LaFaeber Macaw pellets (grind in coffee bean grinder)
1 cup ground raw almonds (grind in coffee bean grinder)
½ lrge. can pumpkin
10 dates chopped
1 pkg spinach/herb pasta (thin noodles) whole wheat from Trader Joes broken in small pieces while dry.
4 slices dried mango chopped
1 cup dried split peas
1 cup popcorn kernels unpopped
1 cup dried lentils
1cup dried barley
1 cup old fashioned oats or steel cut oats not cooked
4 large carrots grated
½ pkg. frozen corn
2 apples grated
3 TBs honey

In large Tupperware bowl mix eggs, crushed shell, honey, ground pellets and almonds, jiffy mix, pumpkin and dry oats. Mix well.
In saucepan rinse split peas, barley, popcorn, lentils, till water runs clear. Let soak in hot water for about 30 min. Then add pasta, mango, dates, apples, and carrots. Bring to boil and then let simmer about 30 minutes. Add all of the saucepan mix into the mixing bowl and add frozen corn. There should be enough water from the saucepan to make a muffin-like batter. If not add water or milk to desired consistency. Bake 375 degrees for 40 minutes. While warm cut into small squares but let them stay in the pans till cooled. Makes 2 9x13 pans. Remove from pans and place in individual daily allotments in zip locks or Food Saver bags. (I love my foodsaver!) Freeze and pull out as needed.
