"Starting January 1, 2006, all packaged foods that enter interstate commerce in the United States must list trans fat content on their Nutrition Facts labels." (see source below)
Hi everybirdie,
This is regarding more of "people" food than birdie food but we all need to watch what we eat.
Trans fat is some seriously bad stuff and even the FDA recognizes the link between trans fat and an increased risk of coronary heart disease which is the number one killer of people in the USA !!! (see FDA source below)
I want to pass along a warning regarding this new law. This afternoon hubby and I went grocery shopping (for ourselves) and spotted the new labels. I was buying only foods labled 0 trans fat, believing that the label meant what it said, no trans fat. WRONG!
Here's an article which explains everything but I'll bottom line it for you... even if a food is labled 0 trans fat doesn't mean it's free of trans fat at all!
And yes, the FDA confirms the labeling which seems very misleading IMHO. The good news? We can avoid trans fat by learning how to spot it even when it's camouflaged in the list of ingredients.
Feel free to pass this info along to others.
