I realize that many people are not big supporters of PETA but my hats off to them for this great accomplishment. After MUCH pressure from PETA, PETCO has decided to stop selling large birds.
Although I wish they would prohibit the sale of all parrots, this is a very good start. One of the major problems with the sale of large birds, such as Macaws, is that the employees are uneducated and inexperienced and therefor so is the customer who purchases these birds. Most of their sales are impulse buys and once the birds are no longer "cute chicks" they are either locked away or given up.
Meanwhile, I have noticed that this recent announcement is being highly criticized on some chat boards (run by breeders). Why? Because while they claim to have our bird's interest at heart ... they are busy selling these birds to PETCO. No wonder they are taking this so personally.
No bones about it ... as Martha Stewart says, "It's a GOOD THING!!!"
