I probably feed more nuts to my B&G (JaJaBinks) than most people do their macaws.

JaJaBinks gets 2 hands full of in shell nuts(walnuts/almionds/pecans/pistachios)each night. There's also shelled nuts in their seed mix ( macadamia/walnut/almond/cashews/etc).

In the wild, saw this on the PBS "Real MAcaw" documentary, they feed mostly on Palm Nuts & Brazil nuts. They're in the green stages when they eat them. Course they fly all over to find them, which wears off the fat content. Now the nuts most of us are able to purchase are dry & ripe, so I'm assuming some of the nutrients are long gone by then, as well as some of the fat content. As long as your parrots are active & not perch potatoes they can have nuts every day. JaJaBinks has been getting her 2 hands full of nuts each night for the last 5 years & she maintains her girly figure ;).

While I do agree that macaws need more fat/nuts in their diet, I'm not exactly sure how many they should get daily. 2 handfuls?? That doesn't really mean much to me because I have really small hands.
My GW will get a little more than my B&G, but it'll range from 2 almonds and a walnut, or one of each type of nut. It's never the same, I also supplement their diet with red palm oil, and other oils so I try to compensate for that as well. I've been doing it that way for a couple of years and I monitor their weight, it's usually the same give or take so it seems to work for us.

Also have you tried feeding her a little warmed up vegtable baby food?
You can get great organic flavors like sweet potatoe, winter squash, pumkin "pie", carrot. My birds really like it and think it's a treat.

take care,
L

After you freeze the cranberries and defrost them, they don't get all mushy like most fruit?

Hi Marie,
No, they actually defrost very well. I stick them in the 'frig and let them defrost that way. I also love tossing the frozen ones into a glass of tonic water for myself. It makes a tasty alcohol free Mocktail. Although we all know any type of soda is toxic to birds, I better toss in this warning for anyone who may be brand new to birds.:)

On with the nuts. I agree with you Toy. I feed my Macaws (not Eclectus) a lot of nuts too. Since they are in the foraging mix it's difficult for me to note the exact amounts. Macaws, just like people, sure can get fat off of these nuts if they aren't active. But we all know that all of the birds on Macaw Dreams get lots of excersise, right? :)
