Hello,
I noticed that some of the pics on this site show loose birds playing on outdoor play gyms. I always thought that it was a big no-no to take a bird outside, even with clipped wings.
Just curious if anyone has had luck using a harness. I recently purchased the Aviator harness for my tiel and ekkie. I'm in the process now of introducing it to them.
Would appreciate any suggestions!
Thanks, Julie :)

We have a Kaylor Collar Bird Harness from www.fredbird.net that we got Scooter when she was just shy of a year old. She's even in the testimonial section though at the time she hadn't been DNA sexed and we thought she was a he. :) We have been outside today, in fact! If anyone is thinking about a harness I really recommend this company. When Scooter got her full size I called them and they sent me 2 or 3 of the belted parts in different lengths at no charge!
I have been wondering if anyone here uses a flight suit for any of their smaller birds? I'd like to take our Quaker out more to visit shut ins and it would be nice to not have to worry about him soiling them or me or the surroundings!

Julie & Cindy, I've never used a harness for Bella, but she usually has clipped wings when we take her out. It is highly recommended that a bird have either one.
As for a flight suit I've heard of many who use them and are successful with them. I never have.

I use the aviator harness and flight suits. I own every model of harness available. Ordered everything to see which I liked better. Which the birds liked better. The birds like Aviator. I agree with them, lol. My umbrella wears a flight suit. He's a regular "mistake" maker, so it seems he needs one. He loves his. I have been working on Sam (blue and gold fledge) to wear a flight suit, as he still makes mistakes. However, he's not into it yet. I redid it so that it's velcro to go over the shoulders, but he is still testy over it and I don't want to push him into anything. My birds go outside on harness and are fully flighted, recall trained *inside*. I don't trust my training outside, lol. If you are going to use a harness on a bird, especially the larger macaws, do they need to know it from near birth? I taught mine from birth. Well, ok, not at birth, but as soon as I could, they were being harnessed daily. Linda |
