I was asked the other day if I would be willing to take in a 27 year old African Grey. The owner who has been married for 34 years is a mess emotionally and shes afraid that she isnt giving her bird the time and attention he needs.
I told her that I would foster him until she could get back on her feet but she said that she is leaving the state and just cant imagine ever being stable enough to take him back.
My heart breaks for both this bird and his owner because Im sure both are going to be devastated by the loss of the other. (Her husband walked out on her in June after 34 years of marriage) I have spent countless hours on the phone talking to her but her mind is made up.
The bird's name is Lucy, he was named before she knew that "he" was a "she". Tomorrow we go to meet Lucy. I know that he is plucking himself since the husband left and that he hasnt spoken a word since then either. As soon as we get back, Lucy is going to our avian vet for some bloodwork,etc...
Oh geez! What a mess! I hope everything works out for both of them. She may want to consult a psychologist or psychiatrist. I went through a divorce and even though the psychologist didn't do much, it did help to talk to someone outside the personal network....
Keep us posted on Lucy's progress! Oh, and GOOD LUCK!!!
