Hi everybirdie,
As most of you know, I'm a member of Carolyn Swicegood's Eclectus group and there has been a wonderful response to the Macaw Dreams Foraging Mix. Anyway, I wanted to tell you all about a new foraging bowl I designed. I'm copying the post I sent to my Ekkie list. LOL. I'm sorry... it's after midnight and I'm sleepy. But I MUST share! rotfl. -------------------
Hi everybirdie, :)
I'm catching up on the posts and sure got a kick out of the posts regarding your birds tossing the foraging mix looking for a favorite treat (especially Linda's). ROTFL. While the mix is definitely designed for playing and tossing we also want it to last for a few hours. If you find your Eclectus is throwing all of the mix on the floor it's a sign that the serving bowl is too small.
I realize it's difficult because bowls designed for cages aren't very big which is why I designed a "platform foraging bowl" that can be used in any cage. I haven't taken photos of it yet but it's easy to build. You buy a large stainless steel dog bowl and a narrow pine board to sit it on. It's OK if the bowl hangs over the edges. The board needs to be long enough to stretch horizontally from one end of your bird's cage to the other or you can place it in the corner of your cage.
You drill a hole in the board and simply slide the board between the cage bars until it rests securely. No hardware needed, just slide it between the bars! We then drilled a hole through the stainless steel bowl. Now you can just reach in the cage, set the bowl on the platform (lining up the holes) drop a stainless steel bolt through the holes and secure underneath with a stainless wing nut. That's it. Now your bird has a fun play table AND a nice huge foraging bowl:).
I'm going to help a friend build one for her bird's cage and I'll be sure to take photos and put it on our website. I'm also going to provide a step-by-step design for people who want a more "finished" platform. Meanwhile, happy foraging!!

I wonder if the stainless bird buckets would work?
Maybe they are still to deep and will encourage a lot of tossing?

Susan,
The stainless buckets are GREAT!!! They are perfect for foraging!! I put buckets in each of the birds cages and filled them with toys but I plan on buying a smaller one for Scarlet (Eclectus) so I can hang it on her play tree where she hangs out during the day. Hey, have you seen the stainless buckets sold at Petco? I believe it was Petco. Anyway they are flat on one side and have a hook to hang them on the side of the bird's cage. Really neat! I still had to secure the Macaw's buckets with quick links because they will just yank them off. ROTFL.

I have a SS Birdy Bucket on the tower we put toy parts in. JaJaBinks loves to toss the toys out & then grab the bucket & get it swinging & banging against the tower.
I also have one in Jasmine's cage with toy parts in.
I don't think I could use these for my birds for food. They'd think the food was toys & dump it all. Had I started them on these early they might have worked great for food foraging tho.

Fabulous idea. I have one very tidy eater and one "tosser". He finds it especially entertaining to feed the dog, who loves it. Still, I bet he'd waste less if he could pick it up again out of the big bowl and finish it off.
Thanks again! |

Personally I use the buckets (I got the idea after our initial visit to Angies) and Bella just LOVES it. I alternate two of them. One I use for foraging and one I use for foot toys.
They are so easy to clean and a blast to watch them with. She sticks her head inside and talks while getting her food or treat.
I highly suggest them!
