Hello everybody, I am new to the board and thought I'd introduce myself. I do know a few people on here. :)
My name is Esther and I am located in PA. I own (at least I think I do, considering they have me jumping through hoops....:)) 2 normal grey cockatiels (Spikey & Scoobie), a love bird (Doobie), a Goffin's Cockatoo (Stitch), a Blue Crown Conure (Kito) and a Military Macaw (Tequila), and two dogs, Kessie and Markus.
Tequila was hatched June 12, 2005 and I've been watching him grow since he was 13 days old. He came home Black Friday and is a total Mommy's boy. Will take food from hubby, but that's about it. He's is fairly nippy and I have a few bruises to proof it. Also, he has one heck of a temper! It amazes me how much personalities these guys have and let you know it!
Looking forward to learning lots from everybody here! Esther

Welcome Esther. I'm so excited and biased - another Military Mama. You've got quite a crew there! Just curious, how did you come to share your life with all of them?

He you ;). Finally found your way here did ya, hehe.
For those who don't know Esther, she is from Germany. Been here about 12 plus years now & she still has that German accent. Altho she'll say what accent, LOL.
She has a bird toy business & makes some really neat toys. You can see them at: www.grahamsparrottoycreations.com
We've known each other for about 2.5 years now. Met on a board like this. We chat/e-mail daily & have visited each other. She's in central lower PA.
Esther's birds have her wrapped right around their talons big time, LOL. Just ask her how many times she's re-arranged her house for their sake ;). Ask her how much room they take up & how much is left for her, huz & the 2 dogs. Ok I'm ducking & running now.
Welcome Esther :), Toy

Thanks for the welcome. Well, actually, Doobie the love bird is who got me started. She was a rescue. One of my former co-workers put her in storage with his furniture in the middle of January here in PA, with no heat. Once I heard that, I had him go and get her and he actually had to borrow my car. I was going to keep her until they found an apartment. Well, I've had her ever since. 6 years now and she's about 20 years old, from what I could find out. Then, I took her to get a clip and a new cage and I saw a Goffin's Cockatoo I thought I'd like to have. So, I got Spikey, normal grey tiel. I wanted to try myself on a "larger" handtame bird (Doobie isn't tame). About a year later, I got Stitch (Goffin's cockatoo). When I went back to the breeder to get some food, I heard this baby cry. I had to know what it was and once I saw it, I had to take it home (eventually). This is how Kito came into the flock. I watched him grow from about 3 weeks on. He was almost 4 months old before he refused anymore hand feedings at the breeders and I could take him home. Then, Spikey seemed lonely so I thought about getting him a friend. Well, there was an ad in the paper about a 6 month old male tiel. Went and added Scooby to the mix. I started researching Macaws before I got Scooby. I wanted a large bird. I read about several macaw species and then got stuck between a B&G and a Military. Funny thing, I got my Bird Talk issue with an article on Militaries......The breeder I've been going to for years, never had any Militariesbut had B&Gs. After reading the article, I went in on a Monday and asked if she could get one....Funny thing, she had gotten a call the night before from a breeder who had one and asked if she wanted it. At first she said no. Once I asked about one, she called him back and said YES! Tequila was the third egg that hatched and the only survivor. The first hatchling died because the parents didn't feed him and they found it too late. The second egg didn't hatch. So, Tequila was supposed to be mine and I have my hands full! They keep me on my toes!

Toy! How dare you! LOL You must have posted as I was writing my response! Thanks for posting my site, but I really don't make many Macaw size toys since they would cost a fortune to ship! I do have a few that'll hold up to the smaller guys like a severe and yellow collared. Definately, Hahns! :)
First of, yeah, what German accent? I don't know what'cha talkin' about! Also, this April, I've been in the USA for 16 years.....Toy missed a few years there.....hehehe Yes, we've visited each other and enjoyed each others company. Too bad we all live so far apart. But, are planning another get together here soon as long as weather permits!
Took me a while, but I found my way. This seems like a nice little group of people.
As far as re-arranging the house, well, let's just say we are thinking about making another re-arrangement......I just want to add on two more rooms! Much easier than dragging furniture from one floor to another!

Esther thanks for the background on the fids. Sounds like adding some space is needed. ROTFL! So your from Germany huh. My husband is also, though he's only been here in the US going on 6 years now. He doesn't miss it and claims to be of Italian decent.

Hi Natalie, yes, you can say that again, need more space! lol
What part of Germany is your husband from? I grew up 45 minutes south of Frankfurt, right along the Rhine River. I do still miss my family and still get homesick around Christmas time. :)

Hi Esther, Welcome! I also live with a military macaw about the same age, hatch August 10, I love him, we call him Sergeant Pepper, Sarge Pepper for short. Also a Rosebreasted Too who's standing next to my hand as I type this. he's fascinated by the computer! And a new recent addition, Lakota, rescued double yellowheaded Amazon. I live in New York. My husband is from Vienna, I get to hear German all the time! Loved hearing how you acquired all those birdies :-)

Hi Marie and thanks for the welcome! Nice to see another Military Mom! There aren't that many around. I love the name, btw! Is Sarge Pepper nippy at all? Tequila loves to pinch and chew on my fingers. I don't mind it until he clamps down too hard! Little bugger knows what he's doing too!
Friends of mine recently moved to NY, Albany. Are you learning any German? lol Hubby would love to learn but I hardly ever speak German. Only when I talk to my family. My Mom lives in Minnesota so we speak German and English in one sentence, whichever is easier comes out. lol
My guys have a quite a story to tell! hehehe I am done though. I am out of room and out of time. Taking care of the ones I have is hard enough. Can't imagine adding on anymore at this point. I got my hands full! :)

Esther, my Husband is from Bavaria. My Grandfather was German also but not sure which part he was from. You've struck my curiosity now, I'll have to ask my mother.
I know exactly what you mean about space - there is never enough. LOL

Hi Esther, actually, I speak a little German, because I lived in Hamburg for a year, and have spent a lot of time in Vienna...my youngest son was born there. I've taken German classes, and communicate very well with 5 year olds! But actually, probably not anymore, as I never have the opportunity to practice! The last thing my husband wants to do is speak German with me! BTW, it wasn't too long ago that 1/3 population of the US was of German origin. My father's family also hailed from Germany, most of the Midwest did (they came in droves with the Homestead Act). But that's not from where I inherited my love of birds!

Hi Marie, we'll have to practice your German some time! lol Like I said, I don't speak German very often either. Hubby would like to learn it but being exposed to English all day and night, it's so hard to try to carry on a conversation in German. It's gotten so bad that I have actually forgotten certain words and need to look them up in the dictionary. lol
There's alot of German heritage in the area I live in, 30 minutes north of the Mason/Dixon line. Lots of Amish here too. I've always loved animals and used to consider myself a dog person. Having these birds now, I'll take a bird over a dog any time of the day! :)
