I can't get my baby to eat anything lately. she quit eating her zoo preme, she will only eat like for a whole week she would only eat walnuts and cucumber. Then it was only nuts of any kind, now I don't know what it is I can't find it. She will eat a banana if I feed it to her just found that out. I don't know what to do? Any ideas? I am getting afraid that I need to take her in and have her a check up. She isn't really really skinny but she is thin. She will eat meat, and she will eat a string of cheese ( I only have done that once in a great great while, and by string I mean a piece of grated cheese 1.) But I need some ideas. She likes people food, I guess it tastes better but I want her to eat her zoo preme she needs those vitamins. We also had a fruit fly problem so I think maybe she doesn't like bugs. I am at wits end.

Karen:

A few suggestions:
Place a seed/dried fruit mix in her cage dish. In another cage dish place in shell nuts, almonds, walnuts, pecans, etc. Make sure she has fresh water every day in cage.

Parrots often need to see foods being eaten so they know it's safe to eat & also yummy. So try this......let her see you eating veggies & fruits. Make hummm yummy sounds & then offer her some. Place some in a dish in her cage.

You can feed scrambled egg & add veggies in while cooking. I use frozen mixed veggies thawed & drained well. Add a sprinkle of garlic powder & cinnamon.

Try placing her pellet food in with the seed mix.

Another thing you can try is having her sit at the table & eat with you. Just avoid, avacado, chocolate, carbonated drinks & onions. Some meat is OK, chicken bones (leg or thigh bone), pasta, sweet potatoes, mashes potatoes, etc. You do want to try to get her to eat seeds & nuts tho, so limit human foods for night or a few times a week.

Parrots can be finicky, so just keep trying. Most love warm mashed foods.

To get rid of fruit flies....put all fruits & veggies in frig. In a small dish mix 1/4 cup water, 10 drops dish soap & 1-2 table spoons of apple cider vinegar. Set it on the kitchen counter. The fruit flies will collect over night. You may need to change the mix out for a few days before you catch them all.

Best wishes,
Toy

I am still having trouble. Vet say no problems, try different foods, she will eat meat, eggs (yolk), crackers whole grain, nuts, and bananas. I am at my wits end. The only thing I can think of is maybe it is connected to her molting....but if I feed her bananas she will eat the whole thing. I don't want her so spoiled that she only eat if I feed her, I think it is maybe a detachment thing because although I am in her flock and have been since she was a baby - the love of her life, my son lives two hours away and can't have her at his apartment. I think maybe it could be that so he didn't come home for four weeks now thinking she would get over it and eat. Her favorite is those grape zoopreme but only the grape and she won't even eat it. I guess if she is still very active and happy (so to speak) she seems very happy - she is talking a LOT, swinging on her toys and talking to the indian ringneck we have- she seems happy. Just molting and won't eat. I will buy the roudybush what does it taste like? Also is there a good vitamin? You know the vet says what he likes but the bird won't drink the water, so since all of you out there are birdpeople I figure you would have better advice in that dept. She isn't like you can count every bone, but she is thin and HAPPY... she copies the ringneck, so I put them close and I figured if he was eating she would ...it helps a little. I also bought the dried fruit and nuts together and she eats a little of that, she also likes walnuts and peanuts that are chopped up the ones used for cooking. I am just going crazy. I never dreamed I would have so much trouble, I have read everything I can get my hands on and am trying to talk to everyone I can. It is crazy! Last year she was almost too fat. GEE, this is hard....If you saw how much food I have that she wastes and all the money I have spent trying to find something she likes, I be rich. haha.Any help or advice would be fantastic.

Hi Karen,

It sounds like a vet check is in order. If she won't eat zupreme, try some roudybush. They are naturally colored and have the vitamins needed.

Since she likes people food, try some birdy bread. Get some muffin mix (we use betty crocker, least amount of salt). I add a half a bag of frozen veggies (thawed in hot water first). I only add one egg and if I need more moisture, I use unsweetened organic apple sauce. It only takes about 15 to 20 minutes in the oven at 400 degrees. You can also freeze it in daily portions to avoid waste.
Also, you can buy the 10 bean soup mix. I use about 1/4 of the bag and do the fast cook instructions. I add frozen veggies and alternate between rice and pasta. Again, you can freeze it in daily portions.
This time I also made beak appetite (Cinnamon sunrise, the only kind my guys like) and mix that in. Gives them some variety. Today, they will get scrampled eggs and hashbrowns for breakfast.

Let me know how you make out!
Hth,
Esther
