Posted - 02/16/2006 : 08:48:51 Guess I spoke too soon last night. Came down this morning only to find JaJaBinks had ripped her leg open again. I think the scab was pulling & irritating her.
I washed it with water & put a tiny dab of Neosporine on it. It's the only thng I have other than aloe plant. She seemed OK for a short while, then she started fussing again & then grabbed her leg & begain chewing at it. She shakes her leg like it hurts & she wants to take the hurt away. I can tell when she goes to grab it, as she makes a sort of hiss sound first. So since it was barely 6 Am I had to wing it. I got out band-aides, applied some Neosporine to one & placed it around her leg. She let me do this with out a fuss. I asked her to let me see her leg & she held it up for me. I had to use a second band-aid on the bottom because the first one wasn't able to stick right. She nibbled at it a little, but I was afraid if I left her alone all day she'd be in serious shape when I got home. So I packed her up & she's at work with me.
I haven't called the vet yet. I know he will tell me since she can reach it to chew he can't do surgery, as she'd just rip the stitches out. He told me that last Friday. Up to this morning she had not touched it. I'm still giving serious thought into taping a piece of aloe leaf on it for a few hours.
She fussed when she saw me get the crate. I knew she thought she was going back to the vet. Once in my office, which is an old construction site job trailer, she was fine. She spoke to the boss & 2 of the workers :). She's sitting right next to my desk on a gym. Since she is still fully flighted we locked the main door, which is the office door & have the back door, that's down the hall, unlocked for others to come & go. Boss didn't want to risk her flying off into the forest, which is all around us.
I know the vet would be shocked she let me put band-aides on her leg, LOL. If she lets them alone I won't call him. If she doesn't then we may need to use a different type of collar that would restrict her movement even more.
I'll keep you updated.

Posted - 02/21/2006 : 21:50:52 >>Toy, what a great Mama you are!!!<< Thanks :)
>> And thanks to you the vet still have two hands and ten fingers<< Yeah but I was hoping she'd at least get one good bite in, LOL.
Oh I also forgot to mention she can fly with the collar on too :). Told ya it ain't slowing her down one bit, hehe. She spent all morning on the back of my computer chair doing her fav thing.....picking on me.
She took her last dose of antibiotic tonight. I can tell ya if anyone had to give meds to a bird you'd pray your bird was like JaJaBinks. Soon as she'd see the syringe she'd turn her head slightly sideways for me to grasp her beak, tilt her head back & open wide for me to squirt the med in. She's been an angel thru this whole thing.
Late this afternoon she decided she wanted a few pecans. Her normal late day treats are a nutriberry or a cracker. Not this time. She wanted nuts. So she climbed off her cage, opened the container, grabbed a pecan & back up on her cage she went. One wasn't enough she had to go for the second one. I tried to exchange it for a nutriberry, but she wouldn't give it up, LOL.
Her leg is healing well. She did pull the little scab off that was on the outside edge of the leg, but it didn't bleed & she's not touched the bigger one. Now if I can just keep her out of the dogs water dish, LOL.

Posted - 02/21/2006 : 08:55:03 Toy, what a great Mama you are!!! And thanks to you the vet still have two hands and ten fingers . JJB does have so much trust in you as this will make it even stronger. Imagine that . I'm really glad to hear it's healing and will keep the fingers crossed that the collar comes off in two weeks or less. I can understand her about bathing, that's probably the toughest aside from the disk.
Soon, this will be history !

Posted - 02/20/2006 : 18:59:21 Well we took her back to the vet on Saturday at noon. I called at 8 AM & was told they 'd call me back. Soon after we had a "white out". Then a 2nd white out. Temp was barely 26 & the wind was whipping at 30 MPH. Gatta love living in the Northeast!! 2 hours passed & I called back & was told they were measuring collars/attachments/etc to see what might work. I finally got a call around 11 Am to bring her in at noon. The vet thought we could attach a "plastic disc" to her existing collar. The existing collar has 2 screws holes in the top flange area. After we (me...vet handed me the screwdriver, LOL) got the collar off they tried to cut & fit something to it. They were taking too long, so my Huz told him we'd take the stuff with us & do it at home. Vet had no problem, as he's a bit afraid of her, LOL. Anyway she had no problem going back in her crate when I told her we were going home. She ran in, LOL.
Once home, since her collar was off, I let her preen awhile. 4 hours to be exact! She preened pratically the whole time too. We tried several ways to fit a disc to her collar. Full size was almost as big as a dinner plate. She fell right over on her beak, LOL. Poor thing couldn't even walk. So off it came & we cut it down. She still wasn't able to move about very well & then she got her beak on the outside edge of it & started to bite holes in it. The disc is just thin flexable plastic. Anyway it was stressing her out too much so we took it off. I told her she had to let her leg alone so it'd heal & if she didn't then I'd stick the big disc back on. She did a few nibbles, but so far she hasn't ripped it back open. It's healing nicely :).
Poor baby wants a shower so bad she keeps going to the dogs water dish. Vet said if it heals like he thinks it will I can remove the collar in 2 weeks. She will be so happy she can finally have a shower. However this collar hasn't slowed her down one bit either. She can climb up on my chair & pick on me like normal, LOL. She also climbs the dog gates, gets in the food containers & cracks/eats nuts like normal.
One good thing is she's always been very forgiving of me. She has great trust of me, which has been a blessing thru all this. As for the vet....NOT!! LOL.

Posted - 02/18/2006 : 11:25:01 Toy - Silvadene is a prescripted med. Maybe your family doc would prescribe it if you explained the situation? Do you have other animals (dog or cat) that you take to another vet who might write a script for it? My friend suggested trying onternet drug sites to see if it would be workable. My friend also reminded me about a cape and a soft collar they made for their bird. But with the cape and soft collar on, the bird was not able to get around at all - constant supervision. Maybe Angie remembers because she beloings to TEC, too. Someone on there came up with the design of the soft collar. Donna M |

Posted - 02/17/2006 : 23:13:45 Collar isn't working. She can reach her leg/sore. Am gonna call the vet in the morning & see if there's a attachment to make the disc bigger/wider so she can't get her beak over the edge of it. If not then my Huz will try to make one out of plexi-glass. We tried using a plastic lid, but she destroyed it. The collar has 2 screw holes in the disc area we think we can attach 2 pieces of plexi to. Shessh if she wasn't so darm smart!!!

Posted - 02/17/2006 : 22:32:41 Don't forget Vitamin E oil is also wonderful for healing wounds. However, I would wait unti it is scabbed over before applying anything else to it. I hope the new collar works and Ja Ja Blinks is doing the tango again very soon! Oh, and another yummy mash is a hot cereal made by Kashi that is a 7 grain mix. It's yummy with some cinnamon (and for Nimo, cranberries) on top). Nimo says to gice JJB a kiss from him! Pamela

Posted - 02/17/2006 : 19:08:22 JaJaBinks is home. Picked her up late this morning. She has a new collar on. This one has a cylinder shaped base with a sort of plate/washer shaped top. The plate/washer comes right under her jaw. It's clear hard plastic & held together by 2 screws. I had hoped, as the vet did, this collar would prevent her from reaching her leg/sore. NOT!! I just saw her reach down & touch the sore with her beak :(. DRAT!! I kinda wondered....we no sooner got home & she grabbed an almond, held it in her foot cracked it & ate it. Well looks like we may be going back to the vet again, if she picks it open.
Vet told me today that it's healing nicely, flattening out & there's no sign of infection. He said he didn't think surgery would be required. Now all we need to do it get her to let it alone so it heals completely.
So far this collar, which is more restricting than the first one, has not slowed her down one bit. The vet tech said some of them are just too smart...well yeah I would have to have on that is ;). She can climb around like normal, eat normal, etc. So I highly doubt this collar is gonna work. Hummm maybe I should just buy one of those "Bubble Beaks" & stick that on her, LOL.
Angie: >She must really love & trust her Momma to allow you to handle her injury. It sounds like she's asking you to make it all better.<
She usually lets me do just about anything to her. The vet is afraid of her, LOL. He knows she'd rip him to shreds ;). This is one case where teaching them to let you rub their feet, wipe their feet with a wet cloth & touch other parts of their bodies comes in handy. I learned a long time ago when I was breeding/grooming poodles that it was very important to get the pups/dogs used to being touched every where so grooming time would be allot less stressful. I've tried to do this with my parrots as well.
>Toy, I would try and focus on foods rich in Vitamin C because it's a major, major help in healing open wounds. I have read that it could speed healing by 50%. Does she like Kiwi? Papaya? How about Melon?<
The only fruit she'll eat is grapes, bananas & apples. She won't touch oranges/lemones/limes/papaya/melon/etc. She won't eat rice either. BRAT!!
Donna: My vet is head strong. He won't give me any thing to put on it. Is this a rx only med? Can I order it on line some place?
Thanks all for the well wishes. Toy

Posted - 02/17/2006 : 10:45:58 Toy,
Is JaJaBinks back home yet? So sorry to hear about the set back. I asked my friend about the silvadene again and she said it did not harm her bird’s feathers or beak. In fact it really didn’t get on them and she’s fully and beautifully feathered like JaJaBinks. I guess it’s foamy and soaks in fast. If she’s still at the vets, you might want to ask about it. My friend said it worked wonders on her bird’s sores. Well I hope you guys have a better weekend, Donna M

Posted - 02/17/2006 : 00:09:02 Oh, our little JJB is having such a difficult time. :( She must really love & trust her Momma to allow you to handle her injury. It sounds like she's asking you to make it all better.
Toy, I would try and focus on foods rich in Vitamin C because it's a major, major help in healing open wounds. I have read that it could speed healing by 50%. Does she like Kiwi? Papaya? How about Melon? All are good for C. Vitamin A also helps with this.
As for mash? You mentioned my flock's favorite. I also substitute squash in place of the yams. I have also used canned 100% all natural pumpkin. If I add a bit of unsalted butter they go crazy for it!
How about a scrambled egg mix, mashed up in tiny bits?
My guys enjoy whole oats mixed with just about anything. I usually mix in banana and cooked apples. Yogurt is a favorite too.
Next to that my guys really like brown/wild rice with tiny radish seeds and pine nuts mixed in. Tonight I added cranberries too. They don't use their feet to eat this.
Hopefully our members have more ideas for you. I sure wouldn't worry about feeding her the same thing a few times per week ... just so she will eat and not bother her little foot.

Posted - 02/16/2006 : 18:53:07 Well after spending the day with me at work & not picking her bandaids off all day I removed them once we got home. She started to pick, so I called the vet. They said to not put anything on it & to just watch her. After about an hour of watching her pick, jerking her leg, fussing like crazy, etc, I called back. They told me I could drop her off for the night or wait until morning. I was afraid to wait so we took her in tonight. So she's spending the night at the vets again. They're gonna put a disc collar on her this time so she hopefully can't reach her leg. I also asked the tech, to ask the vet, to give her a pain med to help calm her down some.
She is such a trooper & has let me do anything to her leg. I took a few pics this morning, but haven't had time to upload them yet. I'll take more tomorrow once I get her home & try to get them uploaded ASAP. I hope this collar works & she can't figure a way to get to her leg. My guess is I'll have to hand feed her until her boo boo heals.
So I could use any & all mashed food recipies. Foods they would normally not try to pick up with a foot. She loves sweet potates with applesauce or banana, which I've been feeding her daily. She likes oatmeal. Doesn't care for white potatoes.
My Huz was so upset when he got home from work & learned she had ripped her leg open again. He stressed for over an hour! He also wanted me to insist they stick the collar on her & we bring her home tonight. Geez I had a time getting him to accept the fact she had to stay over. He may not be able to touch her, only carry her, be he loves her :).
